How does a hot wire foam cutter work?

The Aixia hotwire EPS foam cutter uses an electronically computer controlled heated wire
to cut the foam. By applying electricity to the Nickel-Chromium cutting wire, the wire
heats up much like the filament in a light bulb.
Because of the heat from the cutting wire, the wire vaporizes the foam around the wire as
it is "cutting". The wire never actually touches the foam, as the foam is
vaporized before the wire touches it. By using heat, the "cut" edges are
automatically sealed, creating a very smooth, finished edge, ready to paint or coat. We
use very high quality wire that produces a very fine cut in the foam.
Our hotwire foam cutters all have small electronic fans mounted on each side of the wire to cool
the wire that is not inside the foam. By cooling the wire outside of the foam, a constant
temperature is maintained across the length of the wire, giving you high quality,
precision cuts.
The computerized electronic controller electronically regulates the temperature and speed
(through the Aixia control software) of the wire. Different types of foam have varying
densities and are produced by different methods. By controlling the speed and temperature
you are assured of the best quality cut possible.
